Silent Vows - Chapter 2
Chapter 2 – The Girl With the Broken Smile
The first time Aditi saw Meera, it was at the hospital — a tiny girl clutching a faded teddy bear, sitting alone in the corner of the waiting area.
"You must be Aditi aunty," she whispered when Aditi approached. Her eyes were dark pools of guarded silence.
Meera was the daughter of Aditi’s old friend, Sanvi. A friend who was now gone — cancer had taken her quickly, cruelly. Meera had no one in the city, no friends her age, and a father she had never seen awake in her memory.
Aditi had taken her home for what she thought would be a week. But nights were the hardest — Meera would cry softly into her pillow, thinking Aditi couldn’t hear.
One evening, while helping her with homework, Aditi asked,
"What do you want for your birthday, Meera?"
The child’s answer was soft and shattering:
"A mummy."
