When Hearts Collide Again - Chapter 4

Chapter 4 – Unspoken Emotions

The break stretched longer than expected. Executives mingled near the pantry, whispering about numbers and projections. But for Aditi, the only numbers she could hear were the frantic beats of her own heart.

She stepped out into the hallway, her heels clicking softly on the marble floor. The corridor was quieter here, away from the noise of the boardroom. She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself.

“Running away again?”

The voice behind her froze her mid-step.

She turned slowly. Aditya stood leaning against the wall, his hands in his pockets, eyes fixed on her. His posture was casual, but the intensity in his gaze was anything but.

Her throat tightened. She forced a polite smile. “It’s called taking a break, Mr. Raychand. You should try it sometime.”

He pushed off the wall and walked toward her, each step deliberate. “You always had a way of turning escape into elegance.”

Her jaw clenched. “And you always had a way of twisting words until they cut.”

For a moment, silence stretched between them, heavy and suffocating.

Then his voice softened. “You could have at least… explained.”

Her eyes flashed. “Explained? After what you accused me of? After you didn’t even give me a chance to defend myself?”

Aditya’s fists tightened at his sides. “Because I thought—” he stopped, inhaling sharply, “—I thought I saw the truth with my own eyes.”

“And what did you see, Aditya?” her voice trembled but held steady, “Me… or the version of me your ego wanted to believe?”

The hallway seemed narrower now, the air heavier. They stood close—too close. The professional masks they wore inside the conference room were slipping, and raw pain bled through.

Aditya’s eyes searched hers, softer now, almost vulnerable. “Do you ever… think of us?”

Her lips curved in a bitter smile. “Every time I want to remind myself why trusting someone too much is a mistake.”

The words hit him like a slap. He looked away, jaw tight. She took a deep breath, stepping past him.

But just as she did, he spoke again, his voice low. “I never stopped.”

She froze. Her fingers tightened around the file she held. She wanted to turn, to look at him, to scream, to cry, to… something. But she didn’t.

Instead, she walked away, her heels echoing down the corridor—each step a rebellion against her own heart.
