One night, after Meera was asleep, Aditya found her in the study, grading papers.

"Aditi…" His voice was low, hesitant. "When I’m fully recovered, when I can take care of Meera myself… will you leave?"

She looked up, startled. "I—" She stopped. The truth was, she didn’t know the answer.

"You never wanted to marry me," he said softly. "I can’t hold you here when you have no reason to stay."

She swallowed. "We’ll see." It was all she could say without betraying the chaos in her chest.
