Silent Vows - Chapter 1
Chapter 1 – The Woman Who Said No to Marriage
The city’s late-summer heat clung to the air like a stubborn shadow. Aditi Sharma leaned back in her small school staffroom chair, fanning herself with an old exam paper. She had just finished another long day of teaching third graders multiplication tables and cursive handwriting — and, as always, the marriage topic had found a way into the conversation.
"Aditi beta, when will you settle down?" her principal had asked that morning, smiling as if the question was harmless.
"I am settled," Aditi had replied evenly, continuing to mark her students’ notebooks.
She had made a silent vow long ago: marriage was not for her. She valued her freedom too much — the freedom to decide what to eat, where to live, when to speak, and when to stay quiet. She had seen how marriage had caged her mother, turning her into a shadow of herself.
No. Aditi would not let that happen.
But fate, as always, laughed at human plans.
