Silent Vows - Chapter 3

Chapter 3 – The Unseen Condition

A week later, the knock on Aditi’s door came from a man in a dark suit — Aditya Rathore’s family lawyer.

"Mr. Rathore has been in a coma for two years," he said, placing a file on the table. "His daughter’s guardianship is… complicated."

Aditi frowned. "She can stay with me until he recovers, right?"
The lawyer shook his head. "The court prefers a legal tie. Unless you are her stepmother, custody will be temporary. And if the family applies, they can move her to foster care."

"Foster care?" The words tasted bitter.

"There is one way," he continued, his tone clinical. "If you marry Mr. Rathore, you automatically gain guardianship."

Aditi’s stomach twisted. "You’re asking me to marry a man I’ve never met… who can’t even say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to me?"

"I’m telling you it’s the only way to keep her."

That night, Meera fell asleep holding her hand. Aditi lay awake staring at the ceiling, her mind battling itself. Marriage was a prison… but letting Meera go felt worse than any prison.
