Chapter 6: The Escape Attempt

The moment Aditya’s words sank into her, Aditi’s chest tightened. His presence was overwhelming — the intensity of his eyes, the authority in his voice, the way he spoke as if the universe itself bent to his will.

But her pride, her fear of losing herself again, rose like a shield.

She stepped back, clutching her dupatta tightly, her voice trembling.
Aditi (whispering, stubbornly): “No… I can’t go back with you. Please, Aditya. Let me go.”

Aditya’s brows furrowed, his eyes narrowing. His jaw tightened, but his voice stayed calm, dangerously calm.
Aditya (low, controlled): “You’ve run once, Aditi. You broke me once. And you think you can do it again?”

She avoided his eyes, her tears blurring everything. Her heart screamed that she still loved him, but her mind whispered — He will never change. He will never let me breathe.

Her Attempt

That evening, after office hours, she quickly packed her small bag at her rented house. Her hands shook as she folded her few clothes and tucked her diary inside.

Aditi (inner voice, panicked): If he stays here, he’ll take me back no matter what I say. I can’t… I can’t live in his shadow again. I need to leave before he cages me once more.

She wrapped her dupatta around her head and slipped out quietly into the narrow streets. The desert wind was harsh, blowing dust around, but her steps were hurried. She aimed for the bus stop — any bus, any direction, just away from him.

But He Knows Her

She reached the deserted bus stand, her heartbeat pounding. The last bus was about to leave. She rushed forward, only to feel a strong hand wrap around her wrist before she could step onto it.

Her breath caught. She didn’t need to turn. She already knew.

Aditya (voice rough, close to her ear): “You really thought you could run again? From me?”

She froze, her eyes widening in shock, her pulse racing under his grip.

He turned her gently but firmly, making her face him. His expression was unreadable — a storm of anger, relief, and love.

Aditi (pleading, almost crying): “Please… Aditya. I just… I just want to live freely. You don’t understand me—”

Aditya (cutting her off, fiercely): “I understand you better than you understand yourself! You think freedom means running away from me? No, Aditi. Freedom means being safe, being loved — and only I can give you that.”

The Coaxing

Her eyes welled up. She struggled weakly, but his grip didn’t loosen. Instead, he lowered his voice, his tone turning softer, almost breaking.

Aditya (hoarse, trembling slightly): “Do you have any idea what I’ve been through? Every day, I woke up fearing that someone would hurt you, that your innocence would be your downfall. I searched every corner of this country, Aditi… because without you, I was already dead.”

His words pierced her. She had imagined his anger, his control, his coldness… but not this raw desperation.

Her tears spilled. She whispered, almost to herself:
Aditi: “Then why… why do you make me feel like a child who can’t decide anything for herself? Why can’t you trust me, Aditya?”

His face softened. He lifted his free hand, brushing a tear from her cheek, his eyes filled with both guilt and possession.

Aditya (gently, firmly): “Maybe I failed. Maybe I held on too tightly. But Aditi… I can’t lose you again. Even if I have to fight you, even if you hate me, I’ll never let you go.”

The Moment of Surrender

Aditi’s resistance broke for a moment. She didn’t move as he pulled her into his arms, holding her so tightly that it felt like he was afraid she’d vanish if he let go.

Her body trembled, torn between pushing him away and melting into his embrace. Her tears soaked his shirt, and his hand caressed her hair, steady and protective.

Aditya (whispering against her hair): “You can run to the ends of the earth, Aditi… but I’ll always find you. Because you’re mine. Always.”

And for the first time since she left him, Aditi felt the truth of those words wrap around her like an unbreakable chain — terrifying, yet strangely safe.
