The Story I Never Meant to Write - Chapter 4
Chapter 4: The Contract Wife
The house had returned to normal.
Relatives had left, the decorations were gone, and so were the fake smiles.
Now, it was just Aditya, Aditi, and the contract that defined their quiet life.
Aditi’s New Project
Aditi sat at her writing desk one morning, typing with rare intensity. Her fingers danced across the keyboard as the story poured out of her.
Title: "The Contract Wife"
A fictional story about a woman forced into a marriage of convenience with a cold, distant man — both trapped by family expectations. A loveless beginning… but an uncertain future.
Each line, each dialogue… somehow felt too real.
Karan, her manager and best friend, called her after reading the first draft.
“Is this… about you?”
“It’s fiction,” Aditi replied quickly.
“You’ve never written something this personal before.”
“It’s just a story, Karan.”
But deep down, Aditi knew it wasn’t just a story anymore.
She was writing her reality — without even realizing it.
Aditya’s Observations
Aditya had started noticing small things about Aditi.
She liked her tea strong, no sugar.
She hummed old Hindi songs while writing.
She read late into the night, sometimes smiling at her screen, sometimes looking lost.
One evening, he saw her laptop open while she went to take a call.
The screen showed the title:
“The Contract Wife – By KVS”
KVS?
Aditya had heard of the mysterious writer. The whole business world had — their books were everywhere.
Could it be… her?
Before he could read more, Aditi returned, and he stepped away silently.
But the thought stayed in his mind.
An Unexpected Softness
That night, the power went out due to heavy rain. The house staff rushed to get candles.
Aditi sat on the floor, calmly looking outside the window. Rain poured like poetry.
Aditya, in his usual mood, paced the room, annoyed.
“No generator backup? How can this house not have power backup?!”
Aditi chuckled softly.
“Maybe some things are meant to stop us. To make us slow down.”
He looked at her — surprised by her calmness.
“Don’t you ever get angry?”
“Of course, I do. I just don’t show it. What’s the point?”
Aditya sat on the floor beside her, without even realizing it.
For a moment, the contract didn’t matter.
Just two people, two strangers, sitting silently in the dark — closer than before.
Riya’s Doubts Grow
Meanwhile, Riya had started to feel uneasy.
The more she saw Aditi, the more she sensed there was something deeper happening.
“She’s too calm,” Riya told Aditya one day. “Too perfect. I don’t trust her.”
Aditya frowned. “There’s nothing to trust or doubt. We’re not in love, remember?”
But even as he said the words… they didn’t sound so true anymore.
Aditi’s Secret, Almost Revealed
One afternoon, a popular news blog posted a teaser:
“Who is KVS? Rumor says the bestselling author is actually someone from a top industrial family!”
Aditya saw the post.
And suddenly… everything made sense.
The writing at night. The secrecy. The name on the laptop.
He looked at Aditi during dinner that night.
She was calm, quiet, lost in thought — unaware that her truth was slowly crawling to the surface.
He didn’t say anything.
But now he had questions.
Real ones.
