Shadows of a Forgotten Love (A Love Born Late. A Betrayal That Came Too Soon) - Chapter 5

Chapter 5: Whispers in the Dark

He didn’t realize when the lie began. She didn’t know when the truth ended.

The days were growing colder. But the chill that seeped into Aditi’s heart had little to do with the weather.

Aditya still kissed her forehead every morning. Still left his coffee half-finished. Still texted “I’ll be late” every other evening. But his presence had started to feel like a stranger wearing her husband’s face.

The Secret Life

Aditya had slipped. Once.

A casual meeting.
Then another.
Then a dinner.
Then the hotel room.

And from that moment, there was no going back.

With Riya, it felt like the old days. The thrill, the passion, the pull.
But also, the guilt.
Every time he kissed Riya, a small part of him felt like he was cheating — not on Aditi, but on the peace he had learned to live in.

“I can’t leave Aditi,” he told Riya one night.
“Not because I love her… but because I can’t destroy her.”

Riya smiled coldly,

“Then lie better.”

Riya’s Silent War

Riya wasn’t satisfied being the secret.

She wanted Aditya. All of him.

So she began a quiet war — not with weapons, but with presence.
She called Aditi at odd times with harmless questions.
She sent Aditya gifts wrapped in confusion.
She “bumped” into them in public places.

Aditi smiled every time. She played the perfect host, the graceful wife.

But inside, she began to stitch clues together.

Aditi’s Awakening

She started observing.

  • The perfume on Aditya’s shirt that wasn’t hers.

  • The unexplained card in his coat pocket: “Missed you today.”

  • His reluctance to meet her gaze in moments of silence.

  • His increased anxiety when she touched his phone.

Still, she said nothing.

Because heartbreak is slow when you love someone.
And Aditi loved him now. Entirely. Truly.

One Rainy Night

He came home late again. Wet with rain, tired, lips slightly bruised.

Aditi stood at the door with a towel, not saying a word.

As he dried himself, she quietly asked,

“Did you love her very much?”

Aditya froze.

“Riya. Did you love her deeply?”

He hesitated. Then whispered,

“Yes.”

She nodded.

“And me?”

A long silence.

Then came the answer she feared:

“I… don’t know.”

Her Heart Cracks Silently

She turned away, tears welling up but not falling. She had no right to demand love, she reminded herself. She came into his life knowing she was second.

But how do you silence a heart that dared to believe?

She went to bed that night, curled on her side, facing away from him. He lay beside her, facing the ceiling, haunted by his own mess.

Between them, the space felt wider than ever.

Ending Line of the Chapter:-

She once believed love didn’t matter.
But now that she had tasted it, its betrayal burned like poison.
