Shadows of a Forgotten Love (A Love Born Late. A Betrayal That Came Too Soon) - Chapter 2
Chapter 2: The Shadow in Her Smile
Aditi had no dreams. Aditya had too many memories.
The wedding was simple. Elegant. Just the way Aditi liked — no chaos, no unnecessary drama. She wore a red lehenga, with a calm expression that mirrored peace more than excitement. Her friends teased her, but she stayed composed. Because she wasn't marrying for love — she was marrying for peace. For her family's joy.
Aditya stood beside her during the rituals — poised, collected, but somewhere distant. His eyes didn’t shine like a man in love. His smile looked practiced.
And when the priest said, “Now see each other as life partners”, Aditya looked at Aditi and saw…
Riya.
The arch of her eyebrow. The way her dupatta slightly slipped from her shoulder. Aditi wasn’t her — but the resemblance haunted him. It soothed him.
He told himself it was destiny.
A second chance. Even if incomplete.
Maybe loving someone similar was better than having no love at all.
The First Night
Their room was decorated with roses and dim fairy lights. But the atmosphere felt… cold.
Aditi sat quietly at the edge of the bed, her wedding jewelry still intact. She looked at Aditya and said softly,
“You don’t need to pretend. I know this is just an arrangement.”
Aditya was startled by her clarity.
“You’re not wrong,” he replied gently. “But I’ll try to be… kind.”
She gave a small nod.
“Kindness is enough. I never expected love anyway.”
And just like that, they slept on opposite ends of the bed — not as husband and wife, but as strangers bound by duty.
Days that Followed
Aditya was attentive. Too attentive.
He ordered her favorite dishes before she asked.
He gifted her perfumes and scarves Riya once loved.
He stared at her a little too long when she wasn’t looking.
He smiled at her the way a man smiles at a memory — not a person.
Aditi noticed everything — but misunderstood it.
She thought maybe he was trying to be a good husband. That maybe he was adjusting, just like her.
She didn’t know that he wasn’t loving her.
He was chasing a ghost through her eyes.
The Mirror Moment
One evening, Aditi stood before the mirror brushing her hair, when Aditya walked in, watching her.
He whispered unknowingly,
“Riya…”
She froze.
He realized his mistake immediately and turned pale.
Aditi slowly turned to him, her voice steady,
“Who’s Riya?”
Aditya paused, then forced a soft smile.
“A friend. From the past.”
Aditi didn’t ask more. She didn’t need to.
She just smiled politely and went back to brushing her hair.
But something inside her shifted that night — a flicker of awareness.
She understands something about him, not completely. but she put all puzzle part together and try to solve this in her mind.
