The Girl Who Forgot Him — Short Story
The Girl Who Forgot Him — Short Story
The beeping of machines echoed in the hospital room as Aditi slowly opened her eyes.
Her world felt blurry, empty… like pages torn from a diary.
A man sat beside her, eyes red, fingers trembling as he held her hand.
“Aditi…” he whispered, voice breaking.
She flinched and pulled her hand away.
“Who are you?” she asked, fear rising in her chest.
Aditya froze.
The doctor stepped forward.
“Mrs. Rathore, you’ve suffered selective amnesia. Some memories—especially emotional ones—may be missing.”
Aditi’s eyes darted back to the man.
He looked shattered.
Destroyed.
Yet he didn’t speak.
Because he couldn’t.
If he told her the truth—that he was her husband, the man she had once loved beyond measure—the doctor feared it would shock her fragile mind.
So Aditya simply nodded and stepped back.
That night, Aditi watched him from her bed.
He sat outside her room as if guarding her from the world.
He looked like someone who had lost everything.
Day by Day… He Came Back Into Her Life
Every morning, Aditya arrived with fresh flowers—her favorites.
Aditi didn’t remember liking lilies, but somehow the scent made her heart warm.
He brought her sketchbooks, not knowing she had forgotten she loved to draw.
He gently encouraged her to walk, to talk, to smile.
But he never crossed the invisible line.
He never touched her without permission.
Never told her he had kissed her a thousand times before.
Never reminded her she once whispered his name like a prayer.
One Evening…
Aditi found him sitting alone in the garden, staring at the sunset.
“Why do you care so much?” she asked softly.
Aditya inhaled shakily.
“I… promised someone I’d always protect you.”
“Who?”
He looked at her—eyes full of unsaid grief, unsaid love.
“Someone who loved you very much.”
Aditi felt a strange ache in her chest.
“Was I… important to you?” she whispered.
His throat tightened.
“You still are.”
Something inside her fluttered—something old, something buried.
A Slowly Returning Heart
Days turned into weeks.
She started noticing things…
The way her heartbeat quickened when he walked into the room.
The way she felt safe when he spoke.
The way her fingers fit perfectly into his when she forgot she was supposed to pull away.
“Have we… met before?” she asked one night.
He smiled sadly.
“Many times.”
“Were we close?”
He looked away, swallowing pain.
“Too close.”
Her eyes softened.
“Then why does it feel like I’m… falling for you now?”
Aditya’s breath hitched.
Because she had fallen before.
Because she had loved him once.
Because he was her home, her beginning, her everything.
But he still didn’t tell her.
He wanted her to fall in love all over again—without memories, without pressure, without the weight of their past.
Only her heart.
The Moment Everything Returned
One rainy afternoon, Aditi slipped on the stairs.
Before she hit the ground, Aditya caught her—arms locked around her, breath trembling with fear.
The thunder roared.
And suddenly—
A flash.
A memory.
A kiss.
A wedding.
Her laughter in his embrace.
His voice saying “Aditi, I love you.”
Her world shook.
She looked up into his terrified eyes and whispered:
“Aditya… my husband.”
He froze.
Tears filled his eyes.
“You remember?”
Aditi nodded, tears spilling.
“How did I ever forget you?”
Aditya pulled her into his arms, holding her like he would never let go again.
“You didn’t,” he murmured.
“You just lost the memories.
Not the love.”
And as the rain fell, Aditi realized—
even when her mind forgot him,
her heart never did.
