🏙️ “Long-Distance Love, Close-Distance Pain” - Chapter 16
Chapter 16: One Bed, Two Hearts
"Sometimes, silence speaks. Sometimes, distance touches. Sometimes… proximity confuses everything."
1:27 AM – Hotel Suite, Mumbai. Cyclone intensifying.
The suite had grown quiet—almost too quiet.
Outside, trees bent to the wrath of the wind. Inside, two people sat on opposite ends of a couch, wrapped in candlelight and all the words they never got to say.
Suddenly, Aditya’s phone buzzed with a system alert.
All outdoor movements restricted. Storm warning continues till morning. All guests are advised to stay indoors.
He sighed, placing the phone down.
“You should take the bed,” he said, without turning.
“I’m not taking your bed, Aditya.”
“You’re exhausted.”
“So are you.”
He finally looked at her, jaw tightening. “There’s only one bed.”
“I’m aware.”
She stood up, brushing past him toward the bedroom. For a second, she stood at the doorway again, unsure.
He followed, stopping just behind her.
“I’ll take the couch.”
“It’s raining sideways. You’ll freeze.”
“I deserve it.”
She turned, arms crossed. “Don’t start the guilt show now.”
He gave a dry chuckle. “Fine. We'll share it. Pillows down the middle. No funny business.”
“Believe me, you’re not that funny.”
2:10 AM – In bed, back-to-back.
The bed was king-sized, yet it felt too small for the history they brought with them.
Aditi pulled the comforter higher, facing the window.
Aditya stared at the ceiling, listening to the storm… and her slow, conscious breathing.
His voice broke the silence again.
“Do you still hate me?”
She didn’t turn. “No.”
He turned toward her. “Then what’s between us now?”
She hesitated. “Distance… Habit… Self-preservation.”
He exhaled. “And love?”
Her body stiffened.
“I didn’t say it’s there,” he added quickly. “I just wondered if it’s dead… or sleeping.”
She closed her eyes. “Don’t confuse memory with love, Aditya.”
“But what if I never stopped?”
“Then that’s your burden. Not mine.”
Silence again. But heavier.
2:47 AM – Still awake.
The storm howled like a wolf chasing its tail.
Suddenly, a loud crack—thunder too close. Aditi jolted.
Aditya instinctively reached out, his hand brushing her back.
“Sorry,” he whispered. “You okay?”
She didn’t pull away. But didn’t respond either.
He let his hand fall.
A beat later, she spoke—softly, brokenly:
“You left when I needed you the most.”
He nodded in the dark. “I know. And I regret it every damn day.”
3:03 AM – A moment.
They lay in silence, but something had shifted.
Between the past and the present, between guilt and forgiveness—something fragile and real hovered.
Not reconciliation.
Not closure.
But a pause in the pain.
She whispered, almost asleep, “Don’t read into this. Just… let me sleep tonight.”
He whispered back, “Just sleep. I promise.”
Somewhere in that stormy night—
Two ex-lovers didn’t fix everything.
They didn’t even speak much.
But for the first time in years…
They didn’t feel so far apart.
Sometimes love doesn’t scream to return. It whispers: I’m still here, if you ever want to try again.
